Background

The North Star BlueScope Steel plant began operating in 1997 with the founding of its owner, North Star BlueScope. Around 2 million tonnes of hot rolled coil are produced annually in the facility. Originally owned partly by Cargill Inc. as well, in October 2015, BlueScope acquired the remaining 50 per cent of North Star BlueScope Steel from Cargill Inc. to move to full ownership of this business.[1]

Expansion

In August 2019, the company announced it would be financing a $700 million expansion to the facility, which would add 950 thousand metric tonnes of capacity to the plant.[2] In 2020, it halted expansion plans due to COVID-19 and announced it was lowering the expansion to 850 thousand tonnes instead, which pushed the completion date back.[3] Currently under construction, it is scheduled to be completed in 2022.[4]
