Background

The North Urimari Birsa coal mine is an opencast mine operated by Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, producing more than 4 million-tonnes-per-annum, on the South Karanpura coalfield in the Ramgarh district, Jharkhand State, India.[5][6] North Urimari Mine is situated in the northern South Karanpura coalfield. The network of surface and underground coal mines on the South Karanpura coalfield, including North Urimari, are owned by Central Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India).[7][6]

The mine began coal production in 1997-1998 at a rate of 0.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa).[8]

Expansions

North Urimari Mine has undergone several expansions throughout its operation. On 8 February 2006, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate change India (MoEFCC) granted environmental clearance for the mine to increase its coal capacity to 3 Mtpa.[10]

In 2019, CCL sought to increase North Urimari's capacity with an additional 1.2 Mtpa.[11][12] But in response to a right of information request in 2021, the mine was not listed by the Government of India as an active new mine project; as such, this project was presumed shelved.[13]

An alternate expansion was granted on 8 February 2022, increasing coal production from 3 to 3.6 Mtpa.[8]

Most recently, North Urimari OCP obtained environmental clearance on 13 February 2023, to enhance its production capacity from 3.6 to 4.2 Mtpa.[14] The project involves the rehabilitation and resettlement of one village and includes 515 project affected families.[14]
