Background
In October 2025, Alberta's government announced a plan to advance a submission for an oil pipeline from Alberta to the British Columbia coast. The provincial government agreed to fund the initial planning and proposal, before handing it off to a private company. No private company had yet agreed to take on the project.[1][2]
In November 2025, Alberta and the federal government signed an MOU that included an agreement to move forward on the pipeline plan, aimed at serving Asian markets. Alberta agreed to submit a formal proposal by July 2026, and to ensure the project is co-owned by Indigenous communities. In turn, the federal government agreed to reduce some regulatory obstacles including through adjustments to the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act.[3]
