Controversy

In August 2018, in the village of Novy Port, public hearings were held on the topic of laying the Novoportovskoye Oil and Gas Condensate Field-Yamburg gas pipeline. Experts tried to convince the local residents gathered in the hall that the work in the Ob Bay would not have a significant impact on the environment. Local residents are opposing this project, but remained silent at the hearing. There are reports of pressure being exerted on those that oppose the pipeline.[2]

Eiko Serotetto, a candidate for deputies of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, who was present at the hearings, opposes the construction of the pipeline, proposing that the company finds alternative options for laying the pipe. Serotetto explains his position by the fact that as a result of this project in the Gulf of Ob, the local population will lose their fish, and hence their livelihood. To make a final decision on the implementation of the project, it still has to go through a number of state approvals.[2]
