Background

Novovolynskaya No 9 Coal Mine is an underground coal mine in Volyn Oblast, Ukraine. The mine's initial capacity was 0.45 million tonnes.

In 2015, the Ministry of Energy decided to close the mine. However the mine continued working in 2017 and also reopened in 2018 after a temporary suspension of operations.

As per media source dated November 2021, the mine was still working, with plans to mine for another 1.5-2 years. Concrete measures to close the mine were only taken in 2021, according to the same source.In June 2021, the mine was without electricity due to unpaid bills and partial flooding of the mine commenced. An incident occurred at the mine in April 2021 where an elevator with people broke off, nine miners were hospitalized with injuries of varying severity.

As of July 2022 and September 2022, the mine appeared to be still operating, based on several video reports.

In February 2023, liquidation of the mine was postponed by a year as the mine still had coal reserves of more than 30 thousand tonnes. However the mine was being prepared for liquidation and a project "Fair transformation of the mine" was developed. 404 people worked at the mine, down from 600 in 2021.

A special permit for the subsoil use of the mine's reserves for 20 years was put up for an on-line auction in November 2023.

As of August 2024, the mine was still operating.
