Nová Hut Ostrava steel plant, also known as GFG Liberty Ostrava steel plant, SPV NH Ostrava steel plant, Ostrava Steelworks, ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s., is a steel plant in Ostrava-Kunčice, Moravskoslezský, Czech Republic that operates electric arc furnace (EAF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), and blast furnace (BF) technology.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Ostrava-Kunčice, Moravskoslezský, Czech Republic:

Background

The Ostrava steelworks, previously owned by ArcelorMittal, was purchased by Liberty Steel in July 2019 along with six other steel plants across Europe including Liberty Galati.[1]

In November 2020, GFG Liberty announced plans to install two new hybrid furnaces manufactured by Danieli at GFG Liberty Ostrava.[2] The plan includes replacing the plant's existing four tandem furnaces with two hybrid furnaces by 2023. GFG Liberty reported that the new furnaces would reduce dust emissions by 60 percent. They also reported that once the 400kV power line was installed by 2025, carbon emissions would be reduced by more than 50 percent as the furnaces would be able to use 70 percent scrap, reducing the plant's reliance on imported coal and iron.[3]

In October 2023, however, the remaining furnaces at the plant were idled, and in June 2024, the plant was forced into insolvency.[4][5] By the summer of 2025, a new Czech consortium had purchased the plant, changed its name to Nová Hut, and announced that it would explore options for restarting steel production using electric arc furnaces (EAF).[6]
