Background
In April 2016, the Dangote Group held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new cement plant in Okpella in Edo state. Dangote stated the cement plant would be powered with coal, but no other details on the proposed power plant were reported at the time.[1]
According to reporting from July 2021, the Okpella cement plant would have a 60 MW captive power plant.[2] A social media post on the cement plant by Governor Godwin Obaseki indicated that the power plant would consist of two 30 MW units and be dual fuel, burning coal and an unnamed alternative fuel.
In their third quarter results from 2022, Dangote announced that the Okpella power plant was commissioned in August 2022.[3]
