Background
In September 2024, Malaysian company Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad announced plans to build an alumina refinery in Sanggau, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Phase I would have a production capacity of 1 to 1.2 million metric tonnes, and there was reportedly potential for expansion.[3]
In March 2025, a contract was signed for the development of a related captive power project, which would operate under PT Kalimantan Alumina Nusantara. The project would include four circulating fluidized bed boilers.[3] The capacity of the plant was planned to be 2 x 30 MW and 2 x 25 MW.[4]
Construction of the power station was visible on Planet imagery in the first half of 2026.
Financing
In September 2024, Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad entered into agreements to subscribe for an 80% equity stake in PT Kalimantan Alumina Nusantara for RM1.04 billion. The joint venture was established to develop an integrated alumina refinery plant, power plant, jetty, and supporting infrastructure in West Kalimantan, with Phase I of the broader project reported to cost US$750 million and to be funded through equity and loans.[5][6] In March 2025, Wuxi Huaguang Environment & Energy Group signed a contract with Press Metal for the thermal power plant supporting project, including the supply of four 220 t/h circulating fluidized bed boilers, with the contract valued at over CNY 1 billion, or approximately US$138.2 million.[7] No lender, debt package, financial close date, or coal-unit-specific financing amount has been reported for the power station.
