Background

Semen Padang Cement Plant has resulted health effects from a high level of exposure to dust by many employees of the production department, which can lead to lung disease and respiratory symptoms. Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Ministry has asked PT Semen Padang to burn medical waste followed by the closure of two medical waste companies due to overcapacity issues. However, this move has raised concerns with environmental groups who has expressed concerns that the incineration would release emissions containing dioxins (highly toxic and carcinogenic).
