Background

Palesa Coal Mine is a surface mine in the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[4]

HCI Coal, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hosken Consolidated Investments Limited, owns and operates the Palesa colliery. The colliery's mining rights cover portions of the farm Loopspruit and the farm Rooipoort. Mining began in 2009.

The primary consumer of coal from the mine is Eskom, the state-owned South African electricity company.[4]

During the 2021-2022 financial year, the mine recommenced supplying coal to the export market on a medium-term basis, and it is expected to continue to do so into the next financial year.[5]
