Background

Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company, LP (PEPL) is a natural gas pipeline in the United States which brings natural gas from the Panhandle region of Oklahoma east through the Midwest to supply Indiana and Ohio. It is owned by Panhandle Energy - Southern Union Gas Company - Energy Transfer MLP. The company is headquartered in Houston, Texas. Its FERC code is 28.[4]

Panhandle Eastern, founded in 1929 as Interstate Pipe Line Company, was as a subsidiary of Missouri-Kansas Pipe Line Company (Mo-Kan). In 1930, 50% of Mo-Kan's stake in Panhandle Eastern was sold to Columbia Oil and Gasoline Corporation, an affiliate of Columbia Gas and Electric Corporation. In 1943, following a lawsuit between the two, Panhandle Eastern was handed over to Phillips Petroleum Company, a third party designated by Mo-Kan. Eventually, Mo-Kan emerged as the holding company of Panhandle Eastern. Panhandle Eastern eventually gained independence from Mo-Kan by 1971. Panhandle Eastern Pipeline company is a subsidiary of Panhandle Eastern. [3] Currently Southern Union Panhandle LLC, an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Energy Transfer Operating, L.P, owns a 1% general partner interest in Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co and Energy Transfer Operating, L.P indirectly owns a 99% limited partner interest in PEPL.[2]
