Background
The Perth Field was discovered by Monsanto Oil Co. UK via well 15/21a-7 in 1983. Amerada Hess acquired Monsanto Oil Co. UK and conducted an appraisal of the field in the early 1990s. Shell additionally drilled appraisal wells targeting Perth in 1995.[7]
Operators and partners have changed numerous times since Perth’s discovery. Amerada Hess attempted to develop the field between 2000 and 2009, Nexen did so afterward. However, development stalled due to a lack of a suitable tieback host to process sour fluids. DEO submitted a FDP including a floating production, storage and offshore loading (FPSO) design in 2012, but the project was canceled due to declining oil prices in 2015. The Parkmead Group acquired DEO in 2012 and currently holds 100 percent equity in Perth.[7] Parkmead is an independent energy group listed on LSE.[8]
As of 2020, Perth was expected to reach FID in 2021 with first oil in 2023-2024.[7] However, as of April 2022, the anticipated FID for Perth had been pushed back to 2022 with production projected to commence in 2023. Production is expected to peak in 2024, with an end of economic life in 2054.[9]
Offshore Technology states that the field is expected to recover 36.39 Mmboe, consisting of 33.49 Mmbbl of crude oil and 2.87 (17.41 BCF) of gas. Other estimates are higher, including Parkmead’s P50 recoverable resources[10] estimate of 55 Mmboe. Perth is the “core” of Parkmead’s “Greater Perth Area development project.” That project has the potential to deliver between 75 and 130 MMBoe.[10]
Friends of the Earth estimates potential lifecycle emissions of the field to be around 29 MtCo2e.[11]
