The Pilbara Pipeline System is an operating natural gas pipeline system.[1]

Location

The system consists of three pipelines: the Pilbara Energy Pipeline which runs from Karratha to Port Hedland; the Burrup Extension Pipeline, which links Woodside’s Karratha Gas Plant with the Pilbara Energy Pipeline; and Karratha Lateral, which connects Pilbara Energy Pipeline to the Horizon Power Station at Karratha.[2]

Note the length of the pipeline represents the sum of its constituent parts, listed on the APA Group website as the following:[1]

  • 24 kilometers - Burrup Extension Pipeline
  • 216 kilometers - Pilbara Energy Pipeline
  • 5 kilometers - Karratha Lateral
  • 6 kilometers - HBI Lateral
  • 0.2 kilometers - Boodarie Gas Lateral

Background

The pipeline system is owned and operated by APA Group.[1]

The Pilbara Energy Pipeline is the mainline of the system and was constructed in 1996. It has a capacity of 166 terajoules per day.[2] Two additional legs were added later, including the Burrup Extension Pipeline (completed in 1998 with a capacity of 166 terajoules per day) and the Karratha Lateral (completed in 2009 with a capacity of 33 terajoules per day).[2][3]
