Background

The field was discovered by Fina together with partners Mobil, Repsol, and Amerada Hess in 1989.[12] The first appraisal well drilled by Fina in 1990 was a disappointment with regards to the quality of the oil-bearing sand. In 1998, Fina, together with new partners Monument and Repsol, drilled several additional appraisal wells. In 2007, Venture Oil & Gas, who had built up a controlling stake in the field over a period of five years, drilled an additional appraisal well; however, the high viscosity of the oil that was discovered did not align with Venture’s development plan. In 2011-2013, EnQuest won the license and conducted additional evaluations of the field; however, the geophysical parameters of the field did not prove the field to be sufficiently profitable, and EnQuest did not commit to drill a well to retain the license. In 2014, the license was awarded to Orcadian Energy, a LSE listed company, which is now the sole owner and operator of the field.[13][12]

In June 2022, Orcadian submitted a draft FDP to NTSA.[12] Production is expected to start in 2025, is forecast to peak in 2027, and is predicted to continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2040.[13]

Friends of the Earth estimated total lifecycle emissions from the field at 41 MtCo2e.[14]
