Background

Pingwei-I and Pingwei-II

The first four coal-fired units of Pingwei power station, totaling 2,540 MW, were brought online between 1989 and 2007.[7] The plant was originally owned by CPI.[8][9][10]

Pingwei-III

CPI planned Pingwei-III, consisting of two additional coal-fired units, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW. The project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in February 2013, and construction began shortly thereafter. The new units are scheduled to be completed in 2015.[11]

Unit 1 of the expansion began operation in June 2015,[12] and unit 2 in September 2015.[13]

Pingwei-IV

In March 2020, two additional 1,000 MW units at the power station (Pingwei-IV) were listed as a priority project for Anhui province, as part of a UHV power hub in the Yangtze River Delta.[14]

The expansion was permitted by November 17, 2022.[15][16]

Construction of Unit 7 started in late 2023, with the first concrete pour for the main building.[17] Throughout 2024 and 2025, the project hit numerous milestones including the start of boiler installation, cooling tower construction, and boiler water pressure tests.[18][19]

The unit was connected to the grid in December 2025 and passed its 168-hour trial run in February 2026.[20][21]

Construction of Unit 8 began in early 2024 with the first boiler steel hoisting.[22][23]

Major equipment installations and system tests occurred in 2025 and 2026.[24]

The unit was connected to the grid in May 2026 and passed its 168-hour trial run at the end of May 2026.[25][26]

Ownership

In July 2015, China Power Investment Corporation (CPI) and State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) merged to become State Power Investment Corporation (国家电力投资集团), one of the five largest state-owned electricity producers in the People's Republic of China.[27]
