Background

The Pivdennodonbaska 3 Coal Mine (also known as Yuzhnodobasskaya 3 Coal Mine, or M. S. Surgaya Coal Mine) is an underground coal mine in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.

The Pivdennodonbaska 3 coal mine is an underground coal mine. It used to be owned and operated by Donetsk Coal Energy Company, a state-owned company.[6] The activity of Donetsk Coal Energy company was terminated in 2014 and the mine was transferred under the ownership of the Ministry of Energy.[7][8]

As of August 2019 the mine was was apparently shut down.[9] However later sources indicated that the mine was producing in 2020 and 2021. As per Extractive Industries Transparency report from 2023, the mine produced 0.3 Mt in 2020 and 0.466 Mt in 2021.[10] In 2021, a new longwall was launched at the mine, which should have been sufficient for 3 years.[11]

Since March 2022 and still as of January 2024, the mining town of Vuhledar has been a site of intense fighting in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The fighting has completely destroyed and depopulated the mining town Vuhledar.

Russian media source from January 2024 reported that the Russian missiles stroke the mine.[12] The Pivdennodonbaska 3 coal mine and the Pivdennodonbaska 1 Coal Mine are used as as defensive facilities by the Ukrainian military forces.[12]
