TT Iron and Steel Point Lisas steel plant (Planta siderúrgica Point Lisas), also known as ISCOTT steel plant, Iron and Steel Company of Trinidad and Tobago, Arcelormittal Point Lisas, is a steel plant in Point Lisas, Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo, Trinidad and Tobago that operates electric arc furnace (EAF) and direct reduced iron (DRI) technology.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Point Lisas, Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo, Trinidad and Tobago:
- Location: Point Lisas Industrial Estate, Couva, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 10.403605, -61.482939 (exact)
Background
At the time of its commissioning in 1980, the Point Lisas steel plant was known as ISCOTT (the Iron and Steel Company of Trinidad and Tobago).[1] The original facility included two Midrex Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) modules with a combined capacity of 840 ttpa (thousand tonnes per annum) and a melt shop with two 90-tonne Demag electric arc furnaces (EAF).[1] A third Midrex module with a capacity of 1360 ttpa was added in 1999.[2]
In 2006, the Point LIsas plant became a wholly owned subsidiary of ArcelorMittal.[1] Over the next decade the plant faced a series of challenges, including worker unrest, competition from Turkey and China, and mounting debt due to increased costs and a slowdown in the global steel industry.[1] Production declined precipitously at the end of 2015, and in March 2016 the plant was shuttered, leading to the dismissal of 644 workers.[1][3]
Repeated attempts to sell off the plant's assets over the next six years were unsuccessful, and the plant remained mothballed as of February 2022.[3][4][5]
As of November 2022, press reports indicated that the plant was to be sold to TT Iron & Steel Company Ltd, pending government approval and the negotiation of new power purchase agreements.[6] In June 2023, TT Iron officially confirmed its impending purchase of the plant, stating that it planned to invest US $150 million to US $200 million in refurbishing the plant over the next two years.[7] Production was expected to resume under new ownership as early as December 2024, with TT Iron confirming that it eventually planned to convert the plant to run on green hydrogen.[8]
