Background

The terminal in the Slovak capital was originally proposed in 2016,[2] but did not proceed with further planning until 2021.[1]

The terminal is expected to cost approximately €40 million. It is planned to be located on the main course of the Danube, less than one kilometre away from a densely populated area. It would span 5,500 square metres, be connected to existing gas pipelines (and so would not involve gas imports), and would consist of facilities for LNG production, the refuelling of heavy road vehicles, LNG storage, and the bunkering of ships.[1] The project is part of an EU plan to develop the Rhine-Danube transport corridor, which aims to provide an east-west link by connecting roads, railways, and inland waterways across continental Europe and to make freight transport "greener".[3]

Construction is expected to begin in 2022, with completion expected in 2026.[1]

Opposition

Slovak environmental groups which are participating in the public consultation for the project have said it has the potential to increase the Slovak economy's reliance on gas, and have requested an assessment of the project's life-cycle emissions and compatibility with European climate policies. In addition, the terminal's proposed siting less than one kilometre away from a densely populated area of the capital city is raising concerns. The project would also increase traffic and reduce air quality due to the trucks that would use the port's planned LNG fuelling truck station.[3]
