Background

The Profen coal mine is an open-cast mine operated by MIBRAG, near Elsteraue and Profen in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The mine provides lignite to the Deuben industrial power station, Industrial power station Wählitz, and Schkopau power station. The Profen Mine began operations in 1941. It stretches across the Profen Süd, Schwerzau, and Domsen mining fields. The current operator is Mitteldeutsche Braunkohlengesellschaft mbH (MIBRAG), which was privatized in 1994 and has been a subsidiary of EPH Energy since 2012.

In addition to supplying energy to the Schkopau power plant, Profen's largest customers include the MIBRAG industrial power plant in Selectitz, and combined heat and power plants and industrial companies in Chemnitz and Zeitz.

MIBRAG signalled the end of lignite mining in Profen coal mine by 2035.
