Background

Project Artemis (also called the Abilene Clean Campus) would become the single largest project and investment in the history of Abilene and Taylor County.[1] Initial operations would consume 200 MW, although plans include the scaling of the site to 1 GW during the next 20 years. The project would be cited on an 800 acre parcel in a low density residential area west of Abilene. In December 2021, the City Council established the project as a reinvestment zone and the land will be annexed into the city limits. The project is described as a partnership between the city and Lancium, although it is unclear if the city is helping to finance the project.

According to Data Center Dynamics[1], the project "is expected to help Abilene and Taylor County become a major provider of renewable energy, by using revenue from the Bitcoin mining to fund further generation capacity." However, it is unclear if Lancium has plans for renewable energy generation at the site or elsewhere to procure power for the operation. Given the citing of the facility at a major substation, it appears that Lancium will likely derive its power from the grid.
