Puerto Quetzal Coal Terminal
The Puerto Quetzal Coal Terminal is a coal import terminal near San José, Escuintla, Guatemala. It supplies coal for electricity generation at the nearby San José power station.
Location
The Puerto Quetzal terminal is located on Guatemala's Pacific coast, just east of Puerto San José in the department of Escuintla.
Background
Two different companies — TEMSA (Tecnologia Maritima, S.A.) and REPIMEX (Representaciones, Importaciones y Exportaciones, S.A.) — import coal through the Puerto Quetzal terminal.[1][2][3] The two companies' facilities are directly adjacent to one another in the area known as Terminal de Carbón y Combustibles in the northwest section of Puerto Quetzal.[4]
TEMSA is a subsidiary of Corporación Energías de Guatemala[5][6], which also owns the nearby San José power station.[6][7] TEMSA supplies imported coal to the San José power station and other customers (third parties).[6][8] TEMSA's terminal at Puerto Quetzal handles both coal and liquid fuels.[9] It has a 240-meter marginal quay supported by four dolphins[4], with a receiving hopper and conveyor system connecting the berth to a 3.7-hectare coal-storage yard equipped with a circular stacker; stored coal is loaded onto trucks for onward transport. The TEMSA terminal has a coal handling capacity of 2.3 million tonnes per annum.[9]
REPIMEX is a specialized mineral bulk terminal handling both petroleum coke and coal, with a 180-meter marginal quay supported by five dolphins and equipped with four receiving hoppers and a conveyor system linking the berth to the storage yard. The terminal has 5.7 hectares of mineral bulk storage yards and can accommodate vessels up to 225–240 meters in length, with stored material loaded onto trucks for onward transport. The REPIMEX terminal has a solid bulk handling capacity of 2.45 million tonnes per annum (coal and petcoke combined).[9]
In addition to its coal terminal, Puerto Quetzal has a cruise ship terminal, an LPG terminal, and a commercial pier for exports of sugar and other commodities.[4][10]
Coal throughput statistics
Guatemala's National Ports Commission maintains statistics on imports and exports at Puerto Quetzal, showing combined throughput for both the TEMSA and REPIMEX terminals. Annual coal handling volumes took a dip during the COVID-19 pandemic but have rebounded steadily in recent years:
- 2019 2,492,671 tonnes[11]
- 2020 1,482,787 tonnes[12]
- 2021 1,727,525 tonnes[13]
- 2022 1,622,951 tonnes[1]
- 2023 1,971,204 tonnes[14]
- 2024 2,186,858 tonnes[15]
- 2025 2,403,438 tonnes[16]
Coal source
Between 2017 and 2020, Ember reported that Puerto Quetzal's coal imports came almost entirely from Colombia.[17]
