Background
The Raigarh Jindal power station was originally commissioned in 2001 by the Jindal Steel & Power Ltd.[1] Not much public information is available regarding the Raigarh Jindal power station.
In 2017, a research report in the area around Raigarh's coal mines and plants found toxic substance levels much higher than permitted. Cadmium levels were especially high, reaching amounts 169 times higher than safe levels.[2]
In 2018, the plant was mentioned as operational in JSPL's annual report.[3]
In 2020, however, the Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) was found guilty by the National Green Tribune of damaging the environment in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district and was fined 160 crore Rupees (approximately $21 million USD). The court case was filed by citizens who had been adversely impacted by JSPL's operations for decades.[4]
