Background

This grinding plant is owned by Diamond Cement Zimbabwe which is part of Livetouch Investments (Private) Limited[3]. An Environmental Impact Assessment in 2016 stated that the company could reduce its impact on the environment and the community but since then, no work has been done to do so[4].

A 2023 petition written by the Anti Corruption Trust of Southern Africa to the Municipality of Redcliff and the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) outlined the health concerns residents have over the pollution coming from the cement plant[5].  Their main concern is the dust pollution as it has increased the rates of silicosis among residents[4]. After the release of the petition, the EMA conducted an investigation in September 2023 and came to the conclusion that Livetouch is violating the law, asking again, that they implement remedial measures[4]. Another inspection took place in February 2024 and still, no mitigation work had been done[4].
