Background

Riverside LNG is planning to build a small scale, modular LNG export project consisting of 6 trains with a total capacity of 1.4 mtpa LNG. The project will produce liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as well. The developers note that it could be expanded to 8 trains with a total capacity of 1.8 mtpa. The project will be located at the Intels operated port at Onne, Rivers State, Nigeria. The terminal's gas supply will come from 2 sources, connected to a planned 120 km network of gas pipelines, which will be developed as part of the project.[1]

In November 2023, Nigeria and Germany signed a US$500 million renewable energy pact and gas export deal, under which Germany will support renewables development in Nigeria and Nigeria's Riverside LNG will export 0.85-1.2 mtpa of LNG to Germany beginning in 2026.[2]

In December 2023, Riverside LNG was in talks with South Africa regarding an LNG supply deal starting no earlier than 2027.[3]

As of 2025, there had been no updates in two years. The project is presumed shelved. The project website is no longer live.
