Background

In November 2015, the Government of Mozambique signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Great Lakes Africa Energy (GLAE) to generate electric power using natural gas for domestic use at an estimated value of US $400 million.[7]

In January 2017, GL Africa Energy (UK) was awarded a tender to build and operate a 250 MW gas-powered plant by the Government of Mozambique.[8]

November 2021, Natural Gas World reported that the project would be developed in three phases, with the first running for 16 months and bringing the plant's capacity to 50 MW at a cost of US $90 million. The second and third phases will deliver the remaining 200 MW of capacity and take 24 months to complete.[9] Financing will be 70% debt and 30% equity. The plant's electricity will be mostly bought by Mozambique's state power firm Mozambique Electricity, although excess supply will be delivered to other southern African countries.[9]
