Background

In 2005, the global building materials company CEMEX acquired the Brocēni plant. Under CEMEX's ownership, a new, eco-friendly kiln line was constructed in 2010. Then, in February 2019, SCHWENK Building Materials Group, a German-based company, purchased the Brocēni plant from CEMEX as part of a €340 million transaction. In July 2022, SCHWENK Latvija commissioned a new grinding plant at Brocēni, capable of producing cement with a fineness of up to 5600 Blaine. This €34 million investment included the installation of a 170-tonne-per-day mill and a 12,500-tonne silo. In 2024, SCHWENK Latvija initiated a feasibility study, in collaboration with Norway-based Capsol Technologies, to assess the implementation of a 750,000-tonne-per-year carbon capture system at the Brocēni plant.
