Background
After the discovery of the Sakarya Gas Field (Türkiye) in 2020, state-owned Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) began testing the appraisal wells and estimated the field to hole 540 bcm of gas reserves. In 2021, TPAO began awarding contracts for the development of the field, including a 165 km, 16 in subsea pipeline to the onshore production facility and a 36 km, 48 in onshore pipeline to connect it to the national grid.[5][6]
In 2022, construction for the Phase I pipeline began.[7] The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Report was released the same year, mentioning plans for a Phase II, including an additional pipeline.[1]
In April 2023, Phase I came online with a capacity of 3.5 bcm/year.[3]
In December 2024, construction for Phase II began. This phase includes the addition of a 158 km, 16 in transmission pipeline. It is planned to increase output by 10.5 bcm/year for a total of 14 bcm/year. Phase II is expected to produce first gas by 2027.[3][4]
