From Global Energy Monitor

Total includes capacity of both operating and mothballed coal power units based on known operating years. Read more about some possible limitations of data with only known start years here

This tool only reflects operating and mothballed capacity based on Global Energy Monitor’s known operating and retirement years. Based on GEM’s historical status changes data (2014-2023) available upon request, the operating and mothballed capacity by the end of 2015 differed in the following countries by the following capacities: Brazil (+72 MW), China (+9,527 MW), Germany (-199 MW), India (+412 MW), Indonesia (+175 MW), Kazakhstan (+50 MW), Nigeria (+285 MW), Russia (+899 MW), Slovakia (+208 MW), Spain (+37 MW), Taiwan (+196 MW). By July 2023, operating and mothballed capacity differed in the following countries by the following capacities: Brazil (+72 MW), China (+7,828 MW), Finland (-65 MW), Germany (-317.5 MW), Guatemala (-83 MW), India (+142 MW), Indonesia (+75 MW), Kazakhstan (+50 MW), Nigeria (+285 MW), Philippines (-54 MW), Poland (-30 MW), Russia (+949 MW), Slovakia (+208 MW), Spain (+37 MW), Taiwan (+196 MW), Ukraine (-1,685 MW). Using the status changes data as opposed to the operating and retirement years data results in 17 countries keeping coal capacity the same since 2015 instead of 16 countries (+Nigeria), for a total of 82 countries with coal power in 2015 instead of 81.
