Nippon Setouchi Works (Kure Area) steel plant (濑户内制铁所吴地区 (Chinese); 瀬戸内製鉄所呉地区 (Japanese)), also known as Nisshin Steel, is a blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) retired steel plant in Kure, Chūgoku, Japan.

Background

Nippon Steel Nisshin Co. Ltd was founded through the merger of Nichia Steel Co.,Ltd. and Nihon Teppan Co., Ltd in 1959. Nippon Nisshin installed and blew in its first blast-furnace at Kure Works to start integrated steelmaking in 1962.[1] The company had already ceased operating blast furnaces at the Kure site by September 2021. Nippon Steel in September 2023 shut down all facilities at its Kure plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, ending 72 years of operations at the historic site where the Imperial Japanese Navy had its main shipyard until the end of World War II.[2]
