Background
The Shandong Xinfa Xiwang power station began construction in April 2002 and was officially put into operation in November 2003, with three 155 MW units. It will support electrolytic aluminum facilities, as well as provide heating.[2] Located in the Xinfa Hope Industrial Park, Chiping, the first phase of this project had a total investment of 1.5 billion RMB from the Shandong Xinfa Xiwang Aluminum Company, a subsidiary of the Xinfa Group.[3]
Xinfa Group - Environmental Controversies
The Shandong Xinfa Xiwang Aluminum Co and the Xinfa Group has faced many environmental controversies and concerns from locals due to the intense levels of pollution produced by aluminum plants. Several protests have been hosted in other sites of the Xinfa group, particularly at the Lingwantun mining area in Jingxi County. The Xinfa group's Guangxi Xindian power facility drew notable attention for pollution in 2010.[4]
