Background

The Shantou Wanfeng power station provides heat and electricity to 47 companies in the Jinping Industrial Zone, in the Shantou Special Economic Zone in the Beizhou Industrial District.[1][2][3]

The plant, which was commissioned in 1993, is approved to run until 2035, according to a listing of the company on an external site.[4] In 2007, the Shantou Special Economic Zone Wanfeng Cogen Power Co., Ltd invested 87 million RMB to expand the heating supply of the plant.[5]

In 2014, the Ministry of Environment and Ecology (MEE) released a document stating that the Shantou Wanfeng power station had desulfurization, denitrification, and dust removal technologies at the plant.[2] This was confirmed in another statement released by the MEE in 2015.[6]

In 2015, the power plant was fined 1.1 million RMB for excess discharge of pollutants.[1]

In March 2021, the Shantou Ecological Environment Bureau measured the levels of flue gas, nitrogen, sulfur, and other dust coming from several plants in Shantou. The Shantou Wanfeng power station's emissions were below the regulatory limits for all particles/pollutants.[7]
