Background
In August 2024, Aqaba Development Corporation entered into a $125 million agreement with international companies to enhance and modernize the LNG terminal at Aqaba (Aqaba Jordan FSRU).[7] This modernization, overseen by Sofregaz, was expected to take 22 months.[8] The aim of the project is to replace the existing Aqaba Jordan FSRU with a floating storage unit (FSU) and some onshore regasification and with modifications to the existing facilities. A 10 year charter agreement was signed between the National Electric Power Co of Jordan (NEPCO) and BW LNG for an FSU. An unnamed LNG carrier will be converted into an FSU and is expected to start operations in 2026.[9][4] The project is financed in part by a soft loan from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.[6]
