Background

The Shurapskaya coal mine (шахта Шурапская) is a proposed coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The project is with SDS UGOL, owned by Siberian Business Union.

In 2018 SDS UGOL referred to the potential project and the possibility to attract a Chinese company ZMJ for the design of the mine.[1] Phase 1 of the project is 5 million tonnes per annum.[2] The project is included in the Government's Programme for 'Coal Industry Development up to 2035' from June 2020.[2]

There was no news on the progress of the project since then. In September 2022, the governor of Kuzbass said that new mine projects are on hold due to infrastructure restrictions of coal exports through the Eastern route of Russian Railways, only the projects that are nearing completion are being finished.[3]

Given the lack of updates on the project's progress and this recent announcement, the project is considered Shelved.
