Background

In January, 2025, owner Siam Cement Lampang Co Ltd announced that it would drop its application for the Maetha lignite mine in Lampang, which it had originally planned to use for fuel at the cement plant. The company also ruled out purchasing coal from the Omkoi coal mine project in the neighbouring Chiang Mai province. This announcement comes after calls from activist groups, including Greenpeace Thailand, to avoid the use of coal.

The Siam Cement Biomass Project involves the plant to use renewable biomass fuel, mostly rice husk, instead of fossil fuels. The project also implemented a range of social and environmental programs, including forest conservation, school scholarships, and supporting small-scale local industries.
