South Africa Solar Power

From Global Energy Monitor

BNEF Forecast

In a 2021 presentation, Bloomberg New Energy Finance forecasted 30 GW of solar and 9 GW of wind installed in South Africa by 2030, producing 59 TWh of wind and solar power. BNEF notes that this is more solar and less wind than the IRP allocation, but notes that the total genreation is close to the 61 TWh in the IRP.[1]

IRP

The Draft IRP 2018 included 7,958 MW of PV and 11,442 of wind in 2030.[2]

The IRP 2019 target 17,742 MW wind and 8,288 MW PV in 2030.[3]

South Africa's Phase 2 Strategic Environmental Assessment for Wind and Solar PV Energy in South Africa (2019) looked into eight Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZs) that were previously identified. In addition, the Phase 2 SEA aimed to identify REDZs in previously mined areas to align wind and solar developments with job losses.[2]
