Headquartered in Billings, Montana, Southern Montana Electric Generation & Transmission Cooperative, Inc., is comprised of five energy cooperatives from southern Montana:

  • Beartooth Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Red Lodge, Montana
  • Fergus Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Lewistown, Montana
  • Mid-Yellowstone Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Hysham, Montana
  • Tongue River Electric Cooperative, headquartered in Ashland, Montana
  • Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative, headquartered at Huntley, Montana

In addition, the City of Great Falls is a member of the cooperative. Together, these six member groups serve 122,000 people.[1]

Power portfolio

Southern Montana Electric does not currently own any power plants; it currently relies on power supplies from Western Area Power Administration and Bonneville Power Administration. The Highwood Generating Station would be the company's first power plant.[2]

Highwood Generating Station cancelled

On January 30, 2009, developers of the Highwood Generating Station voted to halt work on the coal plant. Citing regulatory uncertainty and environmental lawsuits, Southern Montana Electric has instead opted to pursue a 120MW plant that will be powered by natural gas with wind turbines for additional power.[3]
