Background

The Sterlitamak power station plays a vital role in the Bashkortostan's energy complex, supplying heat and electricity to major enterprises in the southern industrial hub, particularly in oil refining and petrochemicals, and to the second-largest city in the Republic. It has been in operation since 1957. In 2022, the Ural Turbine Works has signed a contract for the upgrade of the T-100 steam turbine at the Sterlitamak power station.[10] The project was listed in the Russia's Ministry of Energy 2023-2028 energy program issued in February 2023 and is scheduled to be completed in 2026.[11]

During the turbine modernization, which has been in operation since 1967, the high-pressure cylinder along with the rotor will be replaced, and the medium-pressure rotor will also be upgraded. The turbine will be equipped with a state-of-the-art electro-hydraulic control and protection system. The turbine's nominal capacity will increase from 100 MW to 118 MW, and its operational lifespan will be extended to 220,000 hours. The plan is to install the equipment on the existing foundation of Unit 9 without additional modifications. Turbines from the T-100 series are the cornerstone of generating equipment for Russian thermal power plants, representing the most widely used cogeneration turbines in the 100-130 MW power range in Russia. The Ural Turbine Works has produced over 250 turbines of this series. Reconstruction projects for T-100 turbines are considered the most cost-effective in terms of the balance between capital costs and installed capacity.[10]
