Sumatera Hybrid power station
From Global Energy Monitor
Background
In June 2025, Indonesia publicly released its updated electricity supply business plan (RUPTL 2025-2034). The document listed a 2 x 600 MW "hybrid" coal plant that was to be built by an independent power producer. The units were slated to begin operating in 2032 and 2033. The RUPTL stated that Sumatera Hybrid power station "can be executed as long as demand is available and in accordance with the provisions of Presidential Decree 112/2022" (Google translate).[1]
Reporting on the addition of "hybrid" capacity in the new RUPTL document called the development "concerning". The title "hybrid" reportedly meant that the coal capacity would be co-located with solar capacity.[2]
