Background
Sunrise FLNG Terminal is a proposed LNG terminal in East Timor and Australia.[4] As of 2017, Australia was the second largest LNG exporter after Qatar. The country exports almost 44 million tons a year. [5]
The Sunrise LNG Terminal would be located at the Sunrise and Troubadour fields. The fields are located approximately 93 miles south-east of East Timor and 280 miles north-west of Darwin. They hold 5.13 trillion cubic feet of gas and 225.9 million barrels of condensate.[6] The terminal had a proposed capacity of 3.6 mtpa.[2]
Forbes reported in 2016 Greater Sunrise’s gas reserves are potentially worth more than $8 billion to East Timor.[7]
In February of 2016, Rigzone reported that the Sunrise development had stalled on the account that the Australia and East Timor governments had yet to agree on their maritime borders.[6]
In October 2018 ConocoPhillips sold its 30% share in the Sunrise gas project to the government of Timor-Leste for $350 million, and in November 2018 Shell Australia sold its 26.56% share in the gas project to the government of Timor-Leste for $300 million.[8]
As of July 2023, the Sunrise Joint Venture, comprising Woodside, Timor Gap, and Osaka Gas, was in the midst of the concept selection for LNG production.[3]
In July 2024, Riviera reported that Wood Group has been contracted by the Sunrise Joint Venture to conduct concept studies of the LNG project.[9]
