The Türkiye-Syria Natural Gas Pipeline is an operating natural gas pipeline in Türkiye and Syria.[1]

Location

The pipeline runs from Türkoğlu to Kilis in southern Türkiye and into Aleppo in Syria.[1]

Project details

  • Capacity: 2 bcm/y[1]
  • Length: 93 kilometers[2]
  • Diameter: 36 inches[2]
  • Status: Operating[1]
  • Start year: 2025[1]
  • Financing: Fully funded by Qatar[3]

Background

The Türkiye-Syria Natural Gas Pipeline was originally proposed and constructed as a segment for an extension of the Arab Gas Pipeline, with gas proposed to flow from Egypt into Syria via Jordan, where it would then go on to Türkiye and into European markets. The extension through Syria was constructed in 2011 and connected to Türkiye's grid with the intention of a a south to north gas flow. Political instability and damage meant the pipeline never came online.[4]

In May 2025, the Kilis-Aleppo segment was revamped to deliver Azerbaijani gas from the Shah Deniz Oil and Gas Field (Azerbaijan) to Syria via Türkiye's pipeline network. The pipeline flow was reversed to allow a north to south stream of gas. First gas flowed in August of 2025, intending to boost electricity generation and provide an additional four hours of daily electricity in several war-affected areas. The initial phase includes 3.4 million cubic meters a day, with gradual increases up to 6 million cubic meters a day, with a maximum of 2 bcm per year in the first phase. The 63 kilometer, 36 inch pipeline is financially backed by Qatar.[5][2][6]
