Background

Taiheiyo Cement Corporation ("Pacific Ocean Cement Corporation") (太平洋セメント株式会社, Taiheiyō Semento Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese cement company, formed in 1998 with the merger of Chichibu Onoda (itself a merger of Chichibu Cement and Onoda Cement) and Nihon Cement (formerly Asano Cement).[2]

The Fujiwara Cement plant was completed in 1932.[3][4]

In January 2019, Taiheiyo Cement announced that it has started the country’s first carbon capture and storage (CCS) test at the Fujiwara plant, in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment. It is testing a chemical absorption method on kiln exhaust gases at the plant. Further installations on the project will continue during January 2019.[5]

In March 2024, Taiheiyo Cement announced that it will install a gas engine power system at the Fujiwara cement plant. The system replaces the existing thermal power system at the plant, which uses petcoke. Construction is set to begin in 2025 and the facility will be operational by the end of 2026. The new system will reduce the plant’s CO₂ emissions by 130,000t/yr.[6]
