Background

Taldinskaya-Zapadnaya 1 coal mine (шахта Талдинская-Западная 1) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[4] The Taldinskaya-Zapadnaya 1 coal mine is owned and operated by SUEK Kuzbass JSC, a subsidiary of SUEK.

Taldinskaya-Zapadnaya-1 produces about 2.8 MT of high volatile coal, most is exported.[5] As of 2020, most of the coal produced by SUEK-Kuzbass was supplied to power generating companies in Europe and Asia. In the Kemerovo region, SUEK provides heat and power to the cities of Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk, the towns of Belovo and Myski.[6]

Over the 6 months of 2022, production at the mine was only 530 thousand tonnes, down by 1.2 million tonnes compared with the same period in 2021.[7] 2021 production reached almost 3.4 Mt thanks to the commissioning of a new longwall No 66 with 4.5Mt of reserves. However in 2022 due to hazardous conditions the same production levels could not be achieved.[7] In March 2022, following the inspection by the State authorities, the mine's operations were temporarily suspended.[8] Just a month later in April 2022 it was reported that a rock collapsed at the Taldinskaya-Zapadnaya 1 mine, with two miners left behind the rubble.[9] Without any further news on the matter, it appeared that there were no fatalities. 2022 production figure is not available.

In January 2023, a new longwall was commissioned with reserves of 4.4 million tonnes.[10]
