Background

In 2014, Pemex announced plans to build a $6-billion natural gas liquefaction plant at Salina Cruz. It was met with skepticism, with analysts arguing that Pemex lacks a track record for a comparable operation, and that there isn’t enough gas in Mexico to support export infrastructure. Even so, Pemex suggested an operational date as early as 2020.

There have been no development updates since 2014, and the project is presumed to be canceled.

A separate LNG project, the Salina Cruz LNG Terminal, has subsequently been proposed for the same location.
