Background

Originally estimated to cost £702m ($877m), the Acajutla LNG power project represents the biggest energy infrastructure investment in the history of El Salvador. Located in Acajutla, Sonsonate department on El Salvador's Pacific coast, the project encompasses an offshore marine terminal with a permanently moored floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), an underground natural gas pipeline, three substations, the 378 MW natural gas-fired Pacífico Acajutla power station (also known as the Energia Del Pacifico power plant), and a 44km-long 230kV transmission line connecting the project to the Central American Electrical Interconnection System.[13]

The project's owner and developer is Energia Del Pacifico, a joint venture between US-based majority shareholder Invenergy and El Salvador-based partners Grupo Calleja, VC Energy de Centroamérica and Quantum Energy.[14] In December 2019 Energia del Pacifico announced that it had obtained $1 billion in financing to build the project.[15] In May 2021, Invenergy and BW LNG announced an additional $128.3 million in financing from IDB Invest to fund the FSRU, which will have a regasification capacity of 280 million cubic feet per day, along with 137,000 cubic meters of storage capacity.[16][17]

Initial construction works on the project were started in January 2019, with construction of the FSRU's regasification module beginning in April 2020.[18] In November 2021, technology company Wärtsilä announced that it had completed installation of the FSRU.[19] Full commissioning of the FSRU, originally slated for 2021[13], remained on track for 2022.[19] Upon completion, it was to be Central America's first floating storage and regasification unit.[16]

The 137,000 m³ FSRU vessel BW Tatiana arrived in Acajutla port in November 2021[20] and received its first delivery of LNG in April 2022.[21][22] The associated Pacífico Acajutla power station began commercial operations shortly thereafter, in May 2022.[23][24]
