Background

Termocandelaria consists of two Westinghouse 501FC gas turbine units and is dual fuel (diesel and fuel oil #2 is the secondary fuel source).[12] The expansion project currently underway will convert the power station into a combined cycle facility, increasing the plant's total generating capacity to 566 MW and improving efficiency by 35% due to a lowered net heat rate.[12][13]

As of mid-2021 the expansion project was reportedly more than 50% complete and still on schedule to begin commercial operations in 2022.[14][15][16][17]

As of September 2022, efforts to convert the plant to combined cycle mode were still ongoing.[18] As of February 2023, Termocandelaria's website showed progress on the combined cycle unit to be 82.7% complete.[16]
