Background

The Termoguayas barges ceased their commercial operation in 2016, after having functioned for 10 years, due to a unilateral termination of their concession contract.[6] On December 27, 2022, five years after their retirement, the barges were involved in an accident after "their moorings broke loose from the dock in the Las Esclusas sector and collided with the pedestrian bridge on Santay Island."[6] Following the incident, and after a series of legal actions, the barges have been dismantled and are still at the center of a dispute between the government of Ecuador and Termoguayas Generation S.A.[7]
