Background

In December 2018, Termopernambuco 2 (also called Termope II) was in the design phase and is intended to connect with the SIN and increase electricity reliability in northeastern Brazil.[4] In addition to the power station the project also consists of a 500 kV transmission line, gas pipeline, and floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). In June 2019, the Ministry of the Environment delegated the approval of environmental licensing of the power station to the State Agency for the Environment and Water Resources of Pernambuco.[5]

In May 2021, officials indicated that Neoenergia had no plans to develop Termopernambuco 2, but noted that the company continues to consider selling the project to a new owner or extending current energy supply contracts[1][6], which are set to expire in December 2023.[7] The project was listed as a participant in Brazil's national energy auctions in June 2021.[8]
