  • Permit(s): January 20, 2011 – Environmental Clearance; Environmental Clearance Amendment: 2013-08-23, January 20, 2011 – Environmental Clearance

Background

Chettinad Power Corporation Limited (CPCL) received environmental clearance toward a 1,200 MW subcritical coal-fired power station in 2011,[1] amended to a 1,320 MW supercritical power station in August 2013.[2]

As of November 2017 the project is not listed as under construction and appears to be deferred or abandoned.

Ownership

CPCL was established in 2008-2009 to "capitalize on the emerging opportunities in the Indian power sector and focus on developing, operating and maintaining power projects," according to its website. Power from the Tharangambadi power station will be sold under a combination of long-, medium- and short-term power purchase agreements primarily to industrial and state-owned distribution agencies. The proposed power project would operate on imported coal from Indonesia and indigenous coal.[3]
