Background
The Thống Nhất Coal Mine is an operating surface coal mine in Quảng Ninh Province, Vietnam. The Thống Nhất coal mine is a surface coal mine. It is operated by Thống Nhất Coal Company (Công ty than Thống Nhất), a subsidiary of the state-owned coal company Vinacomin.[16]
Starting in May 1996, the company began underground mining at the Yên Ngựa area of Khe Chàm II in two phases: an initial development phase (1996–2004) that produced over 800,000 tonnes, followed by a deep-mining phase at the -15 to +42 m levels (2004 to September 2019) that produced over 3.8 million tonnes, reaching 179% of its target.[17]
By 2022, after more than six decades and several changes in working area, the company's mining had consolidated back onto the original Lộ Trí area alone.[17] Over its 62-year history to that point the company had produced more than 60 million tonnes of coal and driven over 700 km of new underground roadway, growing from 800 workers to more than 3,400 (including nearly 1,400 underground miners) with average annual output of close to 2 million tonnes.[17]
The company was developing a deep underground mining project below the -35 m level at Lộ Trí, with industrial reserves of over 44 million tonnes, a designed capacity of 2 million tonnes/year, and a planned mine life of over 24 years. The project was slated for completion by 2025 as part of the company's 2021–2025 development strategy, alongside mechanization of hoisting, ventilation, drainage, and electrical-supply systems and a push toward TKV's "green, modern, low-manpower mine" model.[17]
As part of this deep-mining transition, the company operates two main underground levels (-35/+18 and -140/-35) served by more than 30 km of actively maintained roadway and 12 longwall faces; in the third quarter of 2019 it excavated a new 165 m ventilation drift and installed a Russian-made VO-22/14AR main ventilation fan station (rated 40–200 m³/s airflow, 800 kW motor) at the +52 m level — one of the company's two VO-22 systems, marking the first use of this automated Russian ventilation technology in Vietnam's coal industry in over three decades — to support a target of 2.1 million tonnes of production by 2020 as mining shifted fully to the -140/-35 m level.[18][17]
For the first nine months of 2025, the company produced 1,465,108 tonnes of raw coal (73.26% of its 2-million-tonne annual plan) and sold 1,447,810 tonnes (72.39% of plan), generating revenue of over VND 1.9 trillion; average worker pay was VND 19,526,000/month.[19]
