Background

Tianjin LNG Terminal (Beijing Gas Group) is an LNG terminal in Nangang, Tianjin, China. It is located next to Tianjin LNG Terminal (Sinopec). The LNG project aims to secure natural gas supply for Beijing.[4]

The project received a permit for construction for all three phases in January 2020[7], and the construction began on March 24, 2020.[8][9] [10]The operation date was set at the end of 2022.[11] Beijing Gas invited expressions of interest for LNG supplies from 2023 to 2032 in June 2021.[12]

To finance the buildout, the developers received a sovereign loan from Asian Investment Bank (US$500 million) and New Development Bank (€430 million) in March 2021.[13]

The first phase contains 4 storage tanks, two 220,000 cubic meters each and two 200,000 cubic meters each, and a 215-kilometer gas pipeline. It will have the gasification capacity of 60 million cubic meters per day.[14] At the end of 2022, the construction of Phase 1 was reportedly completed.[15]

The second and third phase will add 6 more storage tanks. The planned operation date for second and third phases are set at 2023 and 2024, respectively.[14][16]

In June 2023, Reuters reported that Phase 1 would become operational in October 2023.[17]

In September 2023, Phase 1 become operational after receiving its first cargo.[18]A 217-kilometer long gas pipeline transporting the gasified LNG to Beijing was also completed at the same time[19], which is capable to supply 20 million cubic meters natural gas per day, equivalent to one third of Beijing's natural gas consumption.
